Princess Party

Princess Diana Tiara Party – The Princess Party – The History

Princess Diana’s birthday was approaching and the next day, mine. Newly divorced, I decided to throw myself a small, elegant dinner party. I invited only Ladies and requested they all wear tiaras. I wanted it to be a sort of gift to my friends for the beauty in their kindness and generosity with their friendship. I know a Tiara brings out the Inner Princess and I wanted to celebrate that Inner Princess with a party. The Princess Diana Tiara Party was a hit and friends clamored to do it the next year, and the next.

Princess Diana’s tragic death left many bereft and I was asked solemnly what I would do the following year. I moved the party to Labor Day weekend, the anniversary of Diana’s death. A few years later it seemed only natural with so many philanthropic friends, to turn the party into a vehicle to raise funds for women’s needs. My Ladies have not let me down. We have been able to give various organizations thousands of dollars. Past recipients have been the Atlanta Susan G. Komen, Beauty Becomes You, and Atlanta Smiles. One Hundred percent of donations go directly to the chosen organization. With between 80 and 100 women attending each year, if you don’t prove yourself to be a Lady by responding appropriately and in a timely manner, you are off the list. I like to think that we are a selective group.

Simon Shirley, formerly a footman at Buckingham Palace, now the Hospitality Director of Georgian Bank, is always generous and speaks to the Ladies about his time with The Princess and The Palace. My volunteer committee are the “Ladies in Waiting”, and this year they included Ann Ragsdale, Wanda Holt, Lynn Lindskoog, Patty Harris Lundy, Susie Carter, Sherry Knockel, Cyndy Martel, Dawn Bryan, Sharon Marshall, and Elaine Chestney. This year’s charity was Dr. Dina Giesler’s Atlanta Smiles.
